After being submerged in a river for months, the iPhone 12 was discovered to be fully functional

<p>It’s no secret that modern Apple devices are water-resistant, readily withstanding immersion in shallow water or usage in the rain. They are not made to withstand the high air pressure found in deep water bodies like rivers and seas, therefore this protection is rendered useless once they are immersed there.</p>

<p>After three months of submersion in the Stanislaus River in Northern California, an iPhone 12 was discovered in full working order and coated in algae as a result of the prolonged underwater exposure. This unexpected incident was first reported by Apple Insider.</p>
<p>For those who are not acquainted, the iPhone 12 has an IP68 rating, meaning that it can only be immersed for 30 minutes in fresh water up to 6 meters. This makes it unexpected to see the model still functional after three months.</p>
<p>After discovering the iPhone, Lee, the diver, cleaned it up and put it away for a few days. He found out later that it was functional and devoid of a password or biometric lock after charging it. Considering that the last pictures and videos were shot at the Stanislaus River precisely that long ago, he could determine that it had been in the water for over three months. Though he has only located a few phone numbers so far, the diver intends to return it to its owner.</p>
<p>It is essential to remember that because Apple does not provide a guarantee for water damage, purposeful submersion is not advised. Some cases, like this one, have the water damage protection and gaskets still in place, which keeps the phone safe for a long time. These situations are uncommon, however, particularly when the phone is dropped into a deep body of water.</p>
<p>Therefore, never submerge your iPhone or any other water-resistant gadget in water unless you can afford to lose it. Rain and the occasional splash should be okay, however.</p>
