Organizers announced on Thursday that former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will make a comeback to the ring to take on YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in an exhibition match that will be broadcast on Netflix.

On July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) confirmed the fight between Tyson, 57, and Paul.

In a statement, Tyson said that he was excited to take on a fighter who is thirty years younger than him and that he had been impressed by Paul’s early accomplishments in boxing.

Tyson said, “It will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a goat. He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years.”

Paul competed on the undercard of Tyson’s last fight, an eight-round exhibition in 2020 in Los Angeles against Roy Jones Jr., the former middleweight champion.

“I intend to finish him, just as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones,” joked Tyson.

The bout is the most recent example of a trend that has gained popularity in recent years: it pits well-known fighters who are either retired or much beyond their peak against one another or other online superstars.

Logan Paul, the brother of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in 2021, was a major force behind starting the trend.

But Jake Paul, who has a 9-1 record and six knockouts, has grown in popularity.

He defeated Ryan Bourland and Andre August in his final two bouts, scoring consecutive knockouts against professional fighters.

One of the fiercest heavyweight fighters in history, Tyson won his first title at the age of twenty-one years, four months, and twenty-two days, becoming history’s youngest heavyweight champion. He went on to become the undisputed champion from 1987 to 1990.
