Weightlifter Achinta Sheuli, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games, was kicked out of the training camp for the Paris Olympics after he was seen going into the women’s dorm at the NIS Patiala late at night.

The Thursday night infraction took place. Security guards apprehended the 22-year-old, a competitor in the men’s 73kg event, and took a video of the lifter.

Such irresponsibility will obviously not be accepted. Achinta was requested to leave the camp right away, according to a representative of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF).

The event was promptly reported to Vineet Kumar, the executive director of NIS Patiala, and the Sports Authority of India (SAI). SAI was not an investigative panel since the event was captured on camera.

“IWLF was asked to remove Achinta from the camp after the video was forwarded to NIS Patiala ED Vineet Kumar and the SAI headquarters in New Delhi,” a SAI source said.

Sheuli, who set a Games record by winning the gold medal in the 2022 Birmingham CWG, departed the camp on Friday.

There are separate dorms for male and female athletes at the Patiala site. Women wrestlers, athletes, and boxers are now stationed at the NIS.

Not competing in the Olympics

Sheuli’s prospects of making it to the Olympics have also been dashed as a result of his expulsion since he will not be attending the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand this month, which is a must for qualifying for the Paris Games.

Sheuli, who now holds the 27th spot in the Olympic qualifying standings, had a chance to qualify via the continental quota.

The insider said, “It is such a shame because he had actually started getting back on track after his injury.”

The only athletes still in the running for a spot at the Paris Games are 49kg silver medalist Mirabai Chanu and silver medallist Bindyarani Devi from the CWG.
