Gurugram: Buying a gemstone? Check the seller first. That is the strong message from Mr. Ravi Kapoor, founder of Tushar Gems, and Nirupa Bhatt, CEO of IIGJ Lab and former Managing Director of GIA for India and the Middle East, in a new episode of the Tushar Gems Podcast.
The episode, “Before You Buy Gemstone, Know Who Sells”, is now live on the Tushar Gems YouTube channel. It was released on 16 October 2026.
Big questions, straight answers
The nearly hour-long conversation takes on the questions gemstone buyers worry about most:
Does a higher price mean a better stone? Can gemstones bought on large online marketplaces be trusted? What does a lab certificate really prove? And is a lab-grown stone suitable when a ratna is worn for astrological reasons?
The answer running through the episode is one line: “Stone se pehle seller ko jaano”, or know the seller before the stone.
Lab and seller, together on one stage
This is a rare moment for buyers. The laboratory that certifies gemstones and the seller who sells them have sat down for one open conversation.
Ms. Bhatt led the Gemological Institute of America in India and the Middle East, founded the Women’s Jewellery Association in India, and now heads IIGJ Lab.
Mr. Kapoor has run Tushar Gems since 1998. Its stores sell natural, lab-certified gemstones, with untreated stones kept separate from treated or heated ones. Its sealed-pack brand Gemwix carries an IIGJ lab certificate and a printed MRP on every pack.
“No more blind trust”
“If your customer has to take your word for everything, you are asking for blind trust,” Mr. Kapoor has said. “Give them a way to check, and trust follows on its own.”
Why this matters now
More Indian families are buying gemstones online, often on an astrologer’s advice and with no easy way to verify what arrives at their door. Two stones can look the same on screen and still differ widely in origin, treatment and price.
